The Allen E. Broussard Law School Scholarship Fund was established in
November of 1996, under the auspices of the Wiley Manuel Law Foundation,
after the death of California Supreme Court Associate Justice Allen E.
Broussard. Read the bio of Justice Broussard, to
learn more about this outstanding jurist
for whom we honor.
One of Justice Broussard’s goals was the diversification of the
legal profession. He worked diligently in the minority community to assist
young lawyers in their pursuit of a career in the legal profession. He
believed that all minorities must be given opportunities to rise in the
profession and take a place at the table. The Broussard Scholarship is
committed to continuing his work in this area.
In September 1999, the Fund was incorporated as the Allen E. Broussard
Scholarship Foundation (“Broussard Scholarship”). When the
Broussard Scholarship received recognition as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
in 2000, it became a fully independent entity.
At $5,000 each the Broussard Scholarship award is the largest private
scholarship award for law students attending California bay area law schools.
The award amount was selected to enable the Broussard Scholarship to assist
academically well qualified students from economically deprived backgrounds.
All minority law students are eligible to apply for the Broussard Scholarship
awards. First year law students (those due to begin their studies in the
Fall) are given additional consideration, as the first year of law school
is the most difficult, both academically and financially.
It gives us great pleasure to say we have provided $50,000 in scholarship
awards since 1997, and anticipate providing three scholarship awards in
2003.
In addition to financial assistance, the Broussard Scholarship is seeking
to open doors in the legal community for our scholarship awardees and
applicants.
